Why Black and White Photography

Black and White Photography Speaks to The Viewer

Black and white photography brings a timeless and authentic quality, with an emphasis on the deep tones that are fundamental to my work. The rich black tones portray the saturated emotion that initially drew me to the location.

I seek to interpret the values that resonate within my own vision.

My work is a tribute to the natural world of Africa and an examination of the conspicuous and the beautiful. My goal is to create a piece of unique and valuable artwork captured from unusual, remote, and hard-to-reach places.

My Black and White prints are large scale and catch your eye from the second that you walk into the room.

Collecting photographic art is an increasingly popular hobby. Sir Elton John owns the largest photograph collection and has become one of the world’s most discerning enthusiasts. You can join him in these ranks.

Black and white art

withstands the test of time

The first ever photograph was a black and white image which was captured by Joseph Nicephore in 1826. The black and white photographs of that time took more than 8 hours to get the right exposure.

Ansel Easton Adams, an American landscape photographer and environmentalist, born in 1902, became known for his iconic black and white images of the American West. He advocated "pure" photography which favoured sharp focus and the use of the full tonal range of a photograph.

My work has been influenced by the work of Ansel and I use his tonal range system known as the "zone system" extensively.

"Both the grand and intimate aspects of nature can be revealed in the expressive photograph. Both can stir enduring affirmation and discoveries, and can surely help the spectator in his search for identification with the vast world of naturtal beauty and wonder surrounding him"

Ansel Adams
