Animals in the
Landscape
Animals in the
Landscape
The African experience would not be complete without the myriad of animals that roam its vast landscapes.
I have included photographs of some iconic animals that I have been fortunate to encounter whilst capturing African landscapes.
These works are not intended to be traditional wildlife photographs where the focus is on the wildlife itself. Rather, I seek to explore the interaction of these animals with their natural environment and human influences, and in so doing, complete the story.
The sustainability of natural fauna and flora are inter-dependant on each other. Loss of natural habitat is one of the biggest threats to wildlife in Africa.
Through these works, I seek to create awareness of the silent demise of species such as Giraffe and Zebra and others like them in Africa.
90% of the habitat suitable for survival of giraffe in Africa has been lost, and the species has already gone extinct in 7 African countries.
30% of the total zebra population has already been lost due to habitat loss since the turn of the century.
Through my work, I aim to reconnect people with nature in order to promote sustainability and reduce the risk of climate change transforming our continent into a permanent dust bowl that is devoid of animals and habitat.

Line, Shape and Dust
This striking print investigates established formal art design concepts of line, shape, and texture. By eliminating all texture from the elephants and showing only their iconic shapes interconnected with their strong repeating lines, the artist then adds the fine texture of the dust to complete the story.

Turbulent Harmony
This striking minimalistic print captures the calmness of vast open spaces of the bushveld. The calm is juxtaposed with the turbulance of a large herd of buffalo entering the scene from over the horizon. In a strange way, however, the dust somehow adds to the mood .The artist uses a simple horizontal format with lots of white spaced to complete the scense of harmony.

Let the Blind see
As pioneer grazers, the presence of Zebras in nature is critical to maintaining a balanced sustainable eco system, especially in Africa.
Unfortunately, their numbers are declining at an alarming rate. Habitat loss is the main reason for the current rapid decline and we have already l
ost more than 30% in the first quarter of this decade.
Their demise would result in a direct and devastating loss of many other animal species.
Our blind assault on the environment needs to stop NOW to prevent this.
In this photograph, captured in a dry dust storm in Africa, I have deliberately left one edge intact to show how close to the edge of extinction
the zebra population has come.

Foresaken
The forsaken lands had been her home for so long, she had forgotten how lush and green it was.
Powerful forces continue to move in the relentless heat of the dry and dusty earth, each with their
own agenda.
This captivating composition to brings the viewer in full view of the effects of human behaviour on our
environment that have long become invisible to mankind. The time has arrived for us to face the reality
of our actions before we are forced to follow in the footsteps of animals, long after they have become extinct.

Namib Desert Horses
Africa’s ancient Namib Desert in Namibia is home to a century-old population of feral desert horses that have adapted to the extreme
dry and hot conditions. These horses were cut loose during WW1 and left to fend for themselves. Water is provided from a borehole
located at a disused railway siding in the desert.
After successfully surviving for 100 years, they are now under threat of extinction due to a clan of spotted hyenas that have targeted
the breeding mares and foals. Not a single foal survived between 2013 and 2018.
The horse population diminished from 286 to less than 75 while authorities and concerned groups were locked in endless time
consuming discussions on how to deal with the problem.
This photograph captures a fleeting glimpse of the last remaining desert horses.
