The Devil's Knuckles

The artist is confronted with an unusual landscape where the top and bottom halves are located in two different countries. In the distance, the mountain which is called "The Devils' Knuckles" is located in South Africa, and the calm foreground pools, filled with sparklng fresh water, are located in the highlands of Lesotho.

South Africa, with its abundance of mineral weath, is known as the economic powerhouse of Africa. But with a serious shortage of water, it is dependant on Lesotho, an economically poor country, to provide drinking water.

The artist carefully sets up the composition to capture the reflection of the towering mountains in the peaceful water below in order to convey his message of the importance of nature for our survival, irrespective of how much wealth we have aquired in life.

Distorted Throne

The tragedy of power and ambition beautifully captured in this image is strangely captivating. The artist, seeing these shapes emerging from the fog, imagined this to be a scene from the  William Shakespeare's tragedy, Macbeth. Standing before the trio of witches, Macbeth , consumed with ambition of becoming the King of Scotland, is greeted with the words "Fair is foul, and foul is fair: Hover through the fog and filthy air"  

With those words playing in his head and standing in the pouring rain, the artist captures the drama of the play perfectly.
